Candidates are required to have a sound knowledge of two official languages of the European Union (including the candidate’s mother tongue, in case that it is an official European Union language). In their majority, courses are given in English, French or Spanish. Good English is particularly important for practical and social life in Malta. Good Spanish is strongly recommended in order to take the Master.

The Institute provides students with intensive language courses in September and continuous language tuition until the end of March. The EMUI Language Centre organizes language courses of different levels in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish and Portuguese, giving the EMUI researchers the opportunity to improve the languages most relevant for their research.

For the evaluation of the Candidates’ language knowledge the following procedure is established:

At the 1st stage, the applicants must indicate their language knowledge level on the online APPLICATION FORM (Fields 3.1-3.6). The European Language Portofolio-European Language Passport is required for the definition of the level; therefore, candidates are recommended to follow the The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) guidelines, in order to fill in the online application form. Any other evidence of language assessment is not needed.

At the 2nd stage (Language Test and Interviews), and exclusively referring to  candidates who are invited to attend an interview at the EMUI, candidates are called to take a language test, in order to define their level for the language courses that start in September. Although the language test results are irrelevant to the outcome of the Interview, in case that special advice is given to improve language skills, the final admission of the candidate will depend on the progress being made.

At the interview, non-native English and/or Spanish speakers will have to take a written and spoken test in English and/or Spanish. The test, which is compulsory, lasts about an hour and a half and it is similar to the American TOEFL, English IELTS or Spanish DELE tests. The tests can be taken during the period reserved for Interviews and there is no need to book beforehand. In addition, candidates have the possibility to take an optional test in the language that consider more relevant for their research, in case this is not their mother tongue.

Native speakers of English are recommended to take a written and spoken test in one of the other languages taught at the EMUI (French, Italian, German, Spanish, or Portuguese), considering the language most relevant for their research.
